7 Days in the Nilgiris — Ooty, Coonoor and Mudumalai

By V. K. Chand·5 min read·Updated April 27, 2026

The Nilgiri ("Blue Mountains") cluster of hill stations and tiger reserves combines into a self-contained week from either Bengaluru or Coimbatore. Three stops: Ooty (the headline hill town, with the UNESCO Mountain Railway approach); Coonoor (the quieter working tea town below); and Mudumalai (the tiger reserve on the Tamil Nadu / Karnataka border that connects the Nilgiris to Bandipur). Add a half day in Mysore at the end if you have time.

At a glance

  • Total days: 7 (6 nights)
  • Route: Coimbatore → Ooty (3 nights) → Coonoor (2 nights) → Mudumalai (1 night) → Mysore or Bengaluru
  • Distance: ~250 km
  • Best season: April–June (peak summer escape from south-Indian heat), September–November (post-monsoon), December–February (cold and clear).
  • Permits: none. Mudumalai safari is paid at the gate or pre-booked.

Day 1 — Coimbatore to Ooty

Fly into Coimbatore (CJB) — direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai. Either drive up to Ooty (3 hours, 90 km) or take the Nilgiri Mountain Railway from Mettupalayam (the steam-rack section is the highlight, 4.5 hours total to Ooty via Coonoor).

Drop bags. Walk Ooty Lake at sunset.

Stay: Ooty.

Day 2 — Ooty central sights

A full day in Ooty.

  • Morning: Government Botanical Garden (22 hectares laid out by the Marquess of Tweeddale in 1848) and Doddabetta Peak (at 2,637 m, the highest point in the Nilgiris, with mounted telescopes at the top).
  • Lunch: central Ooty — try one of the South-Indian options on Commercial Road.
  • Afternoon: Tata Tea Museum for the Nilgiri tea story; Rose Garden (terraced, said to be the largest in India).
  • Evening: Mall and lake.

Stay: Ooty.

Day 3 — Pykara and the western lakes

  • Morning: Pykara Falls (20 km out) and Pykara Lake (boating).
  • Late morning: drive to the Avalanche Lake area (forest department permit-required visit; arrange through a registered operator in Ooty in 24 hours).
  • Lunch: packed from your hotel or in Avalanche.
  • Afternoon: back to Ooty. Visit St. Stephen's Church (the oldest in the Nilgiris, 1830) on the way.
  • Evening: dinner.

Stay: Ooty. See the Ooty travel guide for full town details.

Day 4 — Ooty to Coonoor

A short transfer.

  • Morning: Mountain Railway from Ooty down to Coonoor (1 hour, the most photogenic section of the line — the rest is diesel below Coonoor, but the Ooty–Coonoor leg is steam-rack).
  • Lunch: in Coonoor.
  • Afternoon: Sim's Park (the central Coonoor botanical garden).
  • Evening: Dolphin's Nose viewpoint at sunset — the long valley view that is the signature Coonoor image.

Stay: Coonoor.

Day 5 — Coonoor: viewpoints and tea

A full day around Coonoor.

  • Morning: Lamb's Rock and Lady Canning's Seat viewpoints.
  • Late morning: working tea factory tour (the Highfield Tea Factory or one of the smaller estate tours).
  • Lunch: at one of the heritage tea-estate properties for a quieter break.
  • Afternoon: tea estate walk; sunset at Catherine Falls or Law's Falls (best in or just after the monsoon).
  • Evening: dinner.

Stay: Coonoor.

Day 6 — Coonoor to Mudumalai

The transfer to wildlife country.

  • Morning: drive to Mudumalai (60 km, 2 hours via Gudalur and the Nilgiri ghats).
  • Afternoon: check in at a Mudumalai lodge or resort. The 3:00 PM safari is the classic afternoon activity (Forest Department bus or shared Gypsy, ~3 hours).
  • Evening: dinner.

Stay: Mudumalai.

Day 7 — Mudumalai morning, then Mysore or home

  • Pre-dawn: morning safari (chances of elephants, gaur, sambar, occasional tigers).
  • Late morning: drive to Mysore (95 km, 2.5 hours through Bandipur tiger reserve — gates close at night, so plan daytime).
  • Afternoon: half day in Mysore (Mysore Palace) before flying out from Mysore (MYQ), or continue to Bengaluru (BLR) by road (140 km).

Practical notes

  • Mountain Railway booking: opens 60 days in advance via IRCTC. The Mettupalayam–Ooty stretch sells out very quickly in May–June and October–November. The Ooty–Coonoor leg is usually easier to book.
  • Bandipur road timing: the highway through Bandipur is closed at night (9 PM–6 AM) to reduce wildlife collisions; plan your drive accordingly.
  • Driving in the ghats: the Nilgiri ghat roads (Coonoor side, Kotagiri side, Mudumalai side) are slow and twisty. Hire a local driver.
  • Crowds: Ooty centre is genuinely crowded in season; arrive at the Botanical Garden, Doddabetta and Pykara early in the morning.
  • Layered clothing: even in summer, Ooty and Coonoor evenings need a sweater. Bring layers.

Variations

  • 5 days: drop one Ooty day and the Mudumalai night; do Ooty 2 nights, Coonoor 2 nights.
  • 10 days: combine with the Karnataka itinerary — continue from Mysore into Coorg for 3 more nights of plantation country.
  • 14 days: combine with Munnar and Kodaikanal in the Southern Hills loop for a full Western Ghats hill-station tour.
