Ooty (Udhagamandalam) Tourist Guide
Ooty — officially Udhagamandalam ("Udhagai") — was the summer capital of the Madras Presidency during British rule and is the headline town of the Nilgiri ("Blue Mountains") at about 2,240 metres in Tamil Nadu. Like Shimla and Darjeeling, the colonial bones still set the tone — the Government Botanical Garden, the Boat House on Ooty Lake, the Stone House (the old Collector's bungalow), St. Stephen's Church. The signature approach is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway from Mettupalayam, a UNESCO World Heritage steam-rack railway that climbs to Ooty in around 4.5 hours through 16 tunnels and 250 bridges.
Getting to Ooty
- By air. Coimbatore Airport (CJB) is the nearest, about 90 km / 3 hours by road. Direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and several Gulf cities.
- By train. The full Nilgiri Mountain Railway experience runs from Mettupalayam (MTP) to Ooty via Coonoor — 46 km in around 4.5 hours, with the steam-rack section between Mettupalayam and Coonoor (the rest is diesel). Sleeper trains from Chennai and Bangalore connect to Mettupalayam. The Mettupalayam–Ooty leg sells out quickly in season; book ahead via IRCTC.
- By road. Drives from Bengaluru (~7 hours), Mysore (~4 hours), Coimbatore (~3 hours via Mettupalayam) and Coonoor (~30 minutes). The Mysore–Ooty drive crosses Bandipur and Mudumalai tiger reserves through restricted-time gates (closed at night) — a beautiful approach.
Things to see
- Government Botanical Garden — 22 hectares laid out by the Marquess of Tweeddale in 1848. Annual flower show in May; a fossilised tree trunk in the lower garden.
- Ooty Lake — artificial lake built in 1824 by the District Collector John Sullivan. Boating, the Boat House, and a small toy-train circuit for children.
- Doddabetta Peak — at 2,637 m the highest point in the Nilgiris. 10 km from Ooty by road; mounted telescopes at the top.
- St. Stephen's Church — the oldest church in the Nilgiris (1830), with stained-glass windows and roof beams reportedly transported from Tipu Sultan's palace in Srirangapatna.
- Tea Museum and Tea Factory — short tour through the production of Nilgiri tea, with tasting at the end.
- Rose Garden — terraced garden with over 20,000 rose plants, said to be the largest in India.
- Pykara Falls and Pykara Lake — 20 km out, popular short drive for waterfall and boating.
- Coonoor — 17 km below Ooty at 1,850 m. A quieter, working tea town with Sim's Park, Dolphin's Nose viewpoint, and Lamb's Rock.
Best time to visit
- April–June — peak summer season for visitors fleeing the south-Indian heat. Days 15–25 °C. The annual flower show is in May.
- July–September — south-west monsoon. Cool and very green, but heavy rain.
- October–November — second peak, post-monsoon. Clear days and Diwali holiday crowds.
- December–February — cold (lows of 0–5 °C) and dry. Christmas–New Year is the busiest time.
Where to stay
The Charing Cross / Ooty bus stand area is central but busy. Quieter stays cluster around the Botanical Garden and the Lake, on Havelock Road, and at Fern Hill (where the Maharajah of Mysore's old summer palace, now a Welcomheritage hotel, sits). The genuine quiet is in Coonoor — many travellers prefer to base there and day-trip to Ooty.
Tips for visitors
- Onward and combine:
- Coonoor is the quiet alternative; pair with a half day in Ooty.
- Mudumalai and Bandipur tiger reserves sit on the Ooty–Mysore road. Combine with a safari overnight.
- Mysore — 130 km / 4 hours by road, easy combine.
- Kodaikanal — the other big Tamil Nadu hill station, 230 km south; possible to combine in a longer trip.
- Mountain Railway booking — opens 60 days in advance and sells out quickly in the May–June and October–November peaks. Try First Class (limited seats, better windows) if the dates work.
- Driving — the Nilgiri ghats (Coonoor, Kotagiri) have some of the most photogenic tea slopes anywhere. Hire a local driver for the day; the views are worth it.
- Crowds — Ooty centre is genuinely crowded in season; arrive at the Botanical Garden, Doddabetta and Pykara early in the morning.
- Altitude: at 2,240 m, no real altitude issues, but pack layers — early mornings and evenings are cold even in summer.
