3 Days in Nainital — A Weekend Itinerary from Delhi
Nainital is the headline town of the Kumaon hills and a long-standing weekend favourite from Delhi. The three days below cover central Nainital and one of the quieter satellite lakes (Sattal for birders, Bhimtal for boaters) or the higher viewpoint at Mukteshwar.
At a glance
- Total days: 3 (2 nights)
- Distance: ~600 km return from Delhi
- Route: Delhi → Kathgodam (overnight train) → Nainital → Kathgodam → Delhi
- Best season: March–June, October–November. December–February is cold with possible snow.
- Booking ahead: weekend hotels around Naini Lake fill 30+ days in advance during peak season.
Day 1 — Delhi to Nainital
Take the Ranikhet Express or Kathgodam Shatabdi overnight from Delhi to Kathgodam (KGM) — the railhead nearest Nainital, about 35 km / 1.5 hours below the town. Pre-book a taxi from Kathgodam to your hotel; shared cabs also run frequently.
Arrive Nainital by mid-morning. Drop bags and head straight to Naini Lake for a boat ride (rowing or pedal — life jackets are mandatory). Walk along the Mall Road between Tallital at the southern end and Mallital at the north, with the Naina Devi temple at the lake's edge in Mallital. Lunch at one of the lakeside restaurants.
In the afternoon, take the aerial ropeway from Mallital up to Snow View (2,270 m) for the panorama of Trishul, Nanda Devi and Nanda Kot. The view is best on clear mornings and evenings; mid-day sun often washes out the snow line.
Walk back through the Tibetan craft market on the Mallital flats. Sunset along the Mall.
Day 2 — Tiffin Top, Hanuman Garhi, and a satellite lake
A morning of viewpoints and an afternoon at one of Nainital's satellite lakes.
- Morning: Tiffin Top (Dorothy's Seat) — a 4 km walk or pony ride from Mallital up to a 2,290 m viewpoint with a stone shelter. The Himalaya panorama is excellent on a clear day. Allow 2–3 hours round trip with stops.
- Late morning: Hanuman Garhi — small temple complex 3 km out of town, with the Indian Astronomical Observatory across the road. Nice short visit.
- Lunch: back in Nainital.
- Afternoon: drive out to one of the satellite lakes (about 30–40 minutes each way):
- Sattal — for birdwatching, with seven small lakes in deep oak and pine forest. Sit at the Studio Cafe at Sattal (a long-running birders' café) and watch the feeders for an hour or two.
- Bhimtal — quieter and larger than Naini Lake, with a small island temple in the middle. More of a boating-and-strolling stop.
- Naukuchiatal — even quieter; nine-cornered lake in a forest basin.
- Evening: back to Nainital for dinner.
Day 3 — Mukteshwar or Naina Peak — then home
Pick one of two contrasting Day 3 options before you head down.
Option A — Mukteshwar: 50 km from Nainital (about 1.5 hours each way), at 2,300 m. A working colonial cantonment with the Mukteshwar Mahadev temple, fruit orchards (apple, peach, apricot), and Chauli ki Jali rocks at the cliff edge with the best Himalayan view in this part of Kumaon. A full half day.
Option B — Naina Peak (China Peak): the highest point above Nainital at 2,615 m. ~6 km on foot or by pony from town. Best Himalayan views of all the local lookouts; the climb takes 2–3 hours each way. Energetic option but no driving.
After your side trip, lunch in Nainital, then taxi back down to Kathgodam for the evening Shatabdi or overnight train back to Delhi.
Practical notes
- Avoid weekends in peak season — Delhi weekend traffic clogs the road from Kathgodam, the parking around the lake is a nightmare, and the Mall is shoulder-to-shoulder. Midweek is much better.
- Vehicles on the Mall are restricted in evenings during peak season; expect to walk in from designated parking lots.
- Boating: life jackets are mandatory and the lake is deep (40 m+ in places); no swimming.
- Hotels: Mallital is the older, busier end; Tallital is quieter and good value. Properties in Ayarpatta and Sukhatal above the main town offer better views and less traffic noise.
- Combining: Nainital pairs naturally with Corbett National Park (80 km south, India's oldest tiger reserve) — easy 2-night extension for a hill-and-wildlife combine.
Variations
- 2 days: drop the Day 3 side trip; do Tiffin Top in the morning, head down after lunch.
- 5 days: stay one or two nights in Mukteshwar for a quieter base with better Himalayan views, or extend to Almora and Kausani for a deeper Kumaon trip.
- A week: combine with Mussoorie (the other big Uttarakhand hill station) for a Garhwal–Kumaon double, or with Corbett National Park for hill-plus-tiger.
