Nainital Tourist Guide
Nainital is built around the eye-shaped Naini Lake at 1,938 metres in the Kumaon hills of Uttarakhand. The lake is the centre of everything — the Mall Road runs along one side, with Tallital at the southern end and Mallital at the north. Rowboats and pedal-boats criss-cross all day, the Naina Devi temple sits at the lake edge, and most of the town's hotels and restaurants face the water from the surrounding slopes. Above the town, the Snow View ridge and Tiffin Top viewpoints catch the high Himalayas on a clear morning.
Getting to Nainital
- By train. The nearest railhead is Kathgodam (KGM), with overnight trains from Delhi (Ranikhet Express, Kathgodam Shatabdi). From Kathgodam, taxis and shared cabs go up to Nainital in about 1 hour 30 minutes (35 km).
- By road. From Delhi, about 7 hours by car or bus via Hapur, Moradabad and Haldwani. UPSRTC and private Volvo overnight services run from Delhi (Anand Vihar ISBT) to Nainital direct or via Kathgodam.
- By air. Pantnagar Airport has limited flights from Delhi, but the schedule is unreliable. The practical option is to fly to Delhi and continue by overnight train or road.
Things to see
- Naini Lake — the centrepiece. Boating from any of the lakeside ghats; pleasant morning and evening walks along the Mall.
- Naina Devi Temple — at the northern end of the lake (Mallital), one of the 51 Shakti Peethas in Hindu tradition. Open dawn till evening.
- Snow View Point — 2,270 m, reached by an aerial ropeway from Mallital. On clear days you see the Trishul, Nanda Devi and Nanda Kot peaks of the high Himalayas.
- Tiffin Top (Dorothy's Seat) — a 2,290 m viewpoint reached by a 4-km horse ride or walk from Mallital. Good Himalaya panorama and a quieter alternative to Snow View.
- Naina Peak (China Peak) — the highest point above Nainital at 2,615 m, ~6 km on foot or by pony from town. The best Himalayan views of all the local lookouts.
- Hanuman Garhi — small temple complex 3 km out, popular for sunset over the surrounding hills.
- Eco Cave Gardens — a chain of small caves with passages through them, mostly aimed at children but a pleasant family stop.
Around Nainital — the Lake District
Nainital is the headline town in a small "lake district" of the Kumaon hills. Many travellers use it as a base for one or two days in these quieter satellites:
- Bhimtal — 22 km away, a larger and quieter lake than Naini, with a small island in the middle.
- Sattal — 25 km away, a cluster of seven small interconnected lakes in deep oak and pine forest. One of the best birdwatching sites in north India.
- Naukuchiatal — 26 km away, a nine-cornered lake set in a basin of forested hills. Quieter still.
- Mukteshwar — 50 km away at 2,300 m. A working colonial-era cantonment with the Mukteshwar Mahadev temple, fruit orchards and outstanding Himalayan views.
- Ramgarh — 30 km away, fruit-growing belt with several heritage stays in old British-era cottages.
- Kausani — 120 km away at 1,890 m; one of the longest unbroken Himalayan-snow horizons in the country (a ~300 km stretch of peaks visible).
Best time to visit
- March–June — peak season, days 15–25 °C. Big crowds during May–June school holidays. Book accommodation ahead.
- July–September — monsoon. Cool and green, much quieter, but heavy rain and occasional landslides on the road from Kathgodam.
- October–November — clear post-monsoon weather; the best months for Himalayan views. Comfortable temperatures, smaller crowds.
- December–February — cold (lows below freezing); occasional snowfall in late December and January. Quiet except Christmas–New Year.
Where to stay
The two main areas are Mallital (the older, busier northern end of the lake near the temple and ropeway) and Tallital (the southern end near the bus stand). Both have lakeside hotels at every price point. For something quieter, look in Ayarpatta, Sukhatal, or higher up at Snow View — or stay outside Nainital itself in Bhimtal, Sattal, Mukteshwar or Ramgarh.
Tips for visitors
- Vehicles are restricted on the Mall Road in the evenings during peak season; expect to walk in from designated parking.
- Avoid weekends in peak season — Delhi weekend traffic clogs the road from Kathgodam, and the Mall is very crowded.
- Onward trips:
- Corbett National Park — 80 km south, India's oldest tiger reserve. Easy combine with Nainital.
- Almora and the Kumaon interior — for quieter, higher hill towns.
- Kausani — for the long Himalayan view; about 4 hours by road.
- Walking — like all hill stations, Nainital is on slopes; strong shoes are needed for anything beyond the Mall.
- Boating safety — life jackets are mandatory; the lake is deep (40 m+ in places).
