7 Days in Tamil Nadu — Temples and Coast
Tamil Nadu's seven-day signature trip combines its great Dravidian temples with its 1,000 km coast. The route runs Chennai → Mahabalipuram → Pondicherry → Tanjore → Madurai, taking in five UNESCO World Heritage temple complexes along the way and ending at the magnificent Meenakshi temple in Madurai. It's a southern temple-architecture tour with beach stops folded in.
At a glance
- Total days: 7 (6 nights)
- Route: Chennai → Mahabalipuram → Pondicherry → Tanjore (Thanjavur) → Madurai
- Distance: ~700 km along the east coast and inland
- Best season: November–February (cool and dry). March–May is brutally hot; October has the south-east monsoon.
- Permits: none required.
Day 1 — Arrive Chennai
Fly into Chennai (MAA). Drop bags at your hotel and start exploring.
- Afternoon: Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore — the iconic Dravidian-style Shiva temple with the seven-tiered gopuram. Walk around the Mylapore neighbourhood — coffee shops, the morning market, the San Thome Basilica.
- Evening: sunset on Marina Beach — at 13 km, one of the longest urban beaches in the world. Dinner at Murugan Idli Shop (the Mylapore branch is the original) or one of Chennai's classic Chettinad restaurants.
Stay: Chennai.
Day 2 — Chennai sights, then Mahabalipuram
Morning in Chennai, afternoon transfer.
- Morning: Government Museum and Art Gallery in Egmore (one of India's oldest museums, with an outstanding bronze gallery — the Pallava and Chola Nataraja figures are world-class) and the adjacent National Art Gallery.
- Lunch: in Chennai.
- Afternoon: drive to Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram) — 60 km / 1.5 hours south on the East Coast Road. Drop bags.
- Late afternoon: Shore Temple at sunset — the 8th-century Pallava temple complex on the beach, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Stay: Mahabalipuram.
Day 3 — Mahabalipuram
A full day at one of India's most extraordinary archaeological sites.
- Morning: the rest of the Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram (UNESCO) — the Five Rathas (free-standing rock-cut temples carved from single boulders), the Arjuna's Penance bas-relief (one of the largest in the world), the Krishna Mandapa, and the various cave temples on the hill.
- Lunch: in town.
- Afternoon: Mahabalipuram beach — long, wide, and surprisingly quiet. Or visit the Sculpture Museum (Mahabalipuram is still a working stone-carving town).
- Evening: seafood dinner.
Stay: Mahabalipuram (or move to Pondicherry tonight to save Day 4 morning drive).
Day 4 — Mahabalipuram to Pondicherry
The colonial French town on the Bay of Bengal.
- Morning: drive to Pondicherry (Puducherry) — 100 km / 2 hours.
- Late morning: check in. Walk the French Quarter (Ville Blanche) — the grid of mustard-yellow colonial villas, the seafront promenade (Goubert Avenue), and the Sri Aurobindo Ashram.
- Lunch: at Le Café on the promenade or one of the French-influenced restaurants.
- Afternoon: Auroville — the experimental international township founded in 1968, 12 km north of Pondicherry. Visit the visitor centre and (with a pre-booked permit) the Matrimandir for meditation.
- Evening: sunset at the seawall, dinner at Carte Blanche or Villa Shanti.
Stay: Pondicherry.
Day 5 — Pondicherry to Tanjore
A long but interesting drive inland.
- Morning: one final walk through the French Quarter.
- Late morning: drive to Tanjore (Thanjavur) — 165 km / 4 hours.
- Afternoon: check in. Brihadeeswarar Temple (the "Big Temple") — UNESCO World Heritage, built by Raja Raja Chola I in 1010. The 66-metre vimana (tower) over the sanctum was the tallest in India for centuries; the Nandi statue carved from a single block of granite is one of the largest in the country. Allow 2–3 hours including the surrounding complex.
- Evening: dinner; sleep early.
Stay: Tanjore.
Day 6 — Tanjore palace, drive to Madurai
Morning in Tanjore, afternoon transfer.
- Morning: Thanjavur Maratha Palace — the residence of the Tanjore Marathas, with the famous Saraswathi Mahal Library (one of Asia's oldest, with manuscripts on palm leaves), the Royal Museum of bronzes (extending the Government Museum's collection from Chennai), and the Durbar Hall.
- Late morning: Tanjore painting workshop — the gold-leaf and gemstone temple paintings unique to Tanjore. Several workshops are open to the public.
- Lunch: in Tanjore — the local food is excellent (try karuvepilai sadam, curry-leaf rice).
- Afternoon: drive to Madurai — 200 km / 4 hours.
- Evening: Meenakshi Amman Temple for the night puja around 21:00 — the closing ceremony, when an idol of Sundareshwarar (Shiva) is carried in procession to Meenakshi's chamber, attended by elephants, drums, and chanting. One of the great experiences of southern India.
Stay: Madurai.
Day 7 — Madurai morning, then home
A full morning at the temple before flying out.
- Morning: Meenakshi Amman Temple — the full daytime visit. The temple is a city within a city, with 14 monumental gopurams (the four outer ones reach 50+ metres), the thousand-pillared hall, the temple tank, and side shrines. Allow 3 hours. Strict dress code — no shorts, no sleeveless; cameras are usually banned inside the inner sanctum.
- Lunch: Madurai's famous Jigarthanda (a cold drink with palm jelly) and a thali at Murugan Idli Shop (Madurai is the original branch).
- Afternoon: flight from Madurai (IXM) — direct services to Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, and a few Gulf cities.
Practical notes
- Driving: the East Coast Road from Chennai to Pondicherry is excellent. The Pondicherry–Tanjore stretch and Tanjore–Madurai stretch are two-lane state highways — slower than the map suggests.
- Train alternative: Chennai to Madurai via Tanjore is well-served by trains; a car is more flexible for the temple stops but trains are quieter.
- Temple etiquette: all the temples on this route enforce dress codes — no shorts, no sleeveless tops. Many require shoes (and leather items) to be removed at the entrance. Photography of the inner sanctums is generally prohibited.
- Heat: even in November–February, midday temperatures can hit 30 °C. Plan temple visits for early morning or late afternoon.
- Auroville Matrimandir: entry to the Matrimandir interior requires a pre-booked permit (apply 1–2 days ahead at the visitor centre). The viewing platform is more accessible.
Variations
- 5 days: drop Tanjore; do Chennai → Mahabalipuram → Pondicherry → Madurai.
- 10 days: add Trichy (Tiruchirappalli) for the Rock Fort and the Sri Ranganathaswamy temple complex (one of the largest functioning Hindu temple complexes in the world); add Rameshwaram for the island temple at the southern tip of the country.
- 14 days: continue from Madurai into Kerala (Kanyakumari → Trivandrum → Kovalam → Alleppey backwaters → Kochi) for the full classic South India loop.
